What a check-up actually involves
A routine examination is not a glance and a goodbye. We check every tooth for decay, look at existing fillings and crowns for wear or leakage, measure the health of your gums, and examine the soft tissues of your mouth, tongue and throat. Where it is clinically warranted we take bitewing X-rays, because decay between teeth and bone loss below the gumline cannot be seen by eye.
If everything is stable, we clean the teeth, remove hardened plaque and stain, polish, and talk through anything worth watching. If something needs attention, you will hear what it is, what your options are, what happens if you leave it, and what each option costs before anything is booked.
Most adults are reviewed every six months. People with a history of gum disease, high decay risk, dry mouth or certain medical conditions are often better off being seen more often, and we will tell you if that applies to you.

Examination
A tooth-by-tooth check for decay, cracks and failing restorations, plus an assessment of your bite and jaw joints.
Scale and clean
Removal of hardened plaque and surface stain above and just below the gumline, followed by a polish.
X-rays when indicated
Bitewing and other radiographs show decay between teeth and bone levels. We take them when there is a clinical reason, not by default.

Costs, health funds and what to expect
You will be given a written, itemised quote with item numbers before any treatment beyond the examination goes ahead. We have HICAPS on site, so your health fund is claimed at the time of the appointment and you pay only the gap. What you get back depends on your level of cover and any limits you have already used for the year.
Children who are eligible under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule can be treated under the scheme. Ring the practice if you are not sure whether your child qualifies.
Treatment carries risk, and outcomes vary between individuals. Cleaning can leave gums tender for a day or two, and teeth can be sensitive after the removal of heavy deposits. X-rays involve a small dose of radiation, which is why we take them only when the clinical benefit justifies it. We will go through the risks, benefits and alternatives of anything we recommend before you decide.
Common questions
How often should I have a check-up?
Six-monthly suits most adults. If you have a history of gum disease or a high decay risk, more frequent reviews are usually sensible. We will recommend an interval based on what we find rather than a blanket rule.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can ring the practice and book directly, whether or not you have been to us before.
I have not been to a dentist in years. Is that a problem?
It is more common than you would think, and it is not something we lecture people about. Tell us when you book so we can allow enough time for a thorough look and a proper conversation.
Will the clean hurt?
Discomfort varies between people and depends on how much build-up there is and how healthy your gums are. Tell us if you are finding it uncomfortable and we will stop, and we can use local anaesthetic where it is warranted.
Do you see children?
Yes. We see children of all ages, and eligible children can be treated under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
