What happens at your first appointment
The first visit is a full examination rather than a quick look. We go through your medical history and any medications, because both affect dental treatment. We then examine every tooth, check existing fillings and crowns, assess your gums, and look at the soft tissues of your mouth, tongue and throat.
If X-rays are clinically warranted we will take them and show you what they show. Then we talk — what we found, what needs doing, what is worth watching rather than treating now, and what happens if you leave something. If treatment is needed you will get it in writing with itemised costs before anything is booked.
In most cases a scale and clean is done at the same appointment. Where there is a lot of build-up, or your gums need more attention than one visit allows, we will say so and arrange a second appointment rather than rush it.

Bring a few things
Your Medicare card, your private health fund card if you have one, a list of any medications you take, and your child’s Medicare details if they may be eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

Transferring from another practice
You do not need permission from your previous dentist to come to us, and you do not need to explain why you are moving. If you would like your records and recent X-rays transferred, we can request them with your written consent — it saves retaking radiographs unnecessarily, which is worth doing where the previous images are recent enough to be useful.
If you have been given a treatment plan elsewhere and want a second opinion on it, bring it with you. We are happy to examine, explain what we see, and tell you whether we agree — including when we do.
If it has been years rather than months since your last visit, that is genuinely fine and it is a common reason people come in. Tell us when you book so we can allow enough time.

How long is a first appointment?
Allow around 45 minutes for an examination, X-rays if needed, and usually a clean.

Can I claim on the spot?
Yes. We have HICAPS on site, so your fund is claimed at the appointment and you pay the difference.
What if I need treatment on the day?
We will explain what is needed and give you a written itemised quote. Urgent problems can often be dealt with at the time; anything else is booked once you have decided.
Can my whole family be seen together?
Ring and ask — consecutive appointments can usually be arranged so you are not making two trips.
