Night splints for grinding

Who benefits most
Children and teenagers get the clearest benefit from sealants and mouthguards, because their adult teeth are new and their sport is often unsupervised. Adults with dry mouth from medication, a history of frequent fillings, or gum disease in the family are the ones for whom closer monitoring pays off most.
Preventative treatments have limits. Sealants can wear or chip and need checking at each visit. Mouthguards need replacing as children grow. Splints protect teeth but can cause jaw discomfort in some people. We will tell you what a given measure can and cannot do before recommending it.

Common questions
At what age should my child have sealants?
Usually soon after the first adult molars come through, around age six, and again around twelve for the second molars. We assess the grooves and the decay risk rather than applying them automatically.
Are shop-bought mouthguards good enough?
They are better than nothing, but they fit less closely and are more likely to move or be spat out. A custom guard is made from an impression of your own teeth.
Will a night splint stop me grinding?
No. It protects the teeth from the effects of grinding. The grinding itself often relates to stress, sleep or bite factors, which we would discuss separately.
Does my health fund cover preventative treatment?
Most general dental cover includes examinations, cleans and fluoride, and many funds cover sealants and mouthguards. We claim through HICAPS so you see the gap immediately.
